Five reasons why Barcelona won the La Liga this year

Lionel Messi's lone goal in the second half was enough for Barcelona to clinch their 23rd La Liga title. Let's have a look at five main reasons for Barcelona's revival.

Five reasons why Barcelona won the La Liga this year

The previous year was rather a one to forget for the Catalan giants, as they ended their season without securing a single title. In other words, a 'trophyless' season. This was an unusual sight considering they had achieved a treble in the 2008-09 season, winning all three major trophies: La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League.

The Spanish giants took their first step towards another treble when they won the fixture against Atletico Madrid on Sunday and effectively secured the first of a probable three titles, the La Liga.

Barcelona face Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final and Italian giants, Juventus, in the UEFA Champions League final.

It was rather ironic how Barcelona won their title. In the previous season, Barcelona on the final match day, faced the same side, Atletico Madrid, in Camp Nou to secure the title. They needed to win this game. But Diego Godin's eqauliser meant the working class side of Madrid won the title.

This time around, Barcelona needed a win to secure their title, but at the Vincente Calderon. And who else than Messi would score the winner to win them their title.

Let's have a look at five major reasons of how Barcelona clinched their 23rd title.

1) Successful Signings:-

The Barcelona side needed some a major makeover after a trophy drought in 2013-14 season. This was planned perfectly and so was executed well.

Goalkeepers José Pinto and Víctor Valdés' expired contracts were not renewed and Barcelona quickly signed youngsters Marc-André ter Stegen from Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Claudio Bravo from fellow Spanish side, Real Sociedad.

Cesc Fabregas was replaced by Croatian star midfielder, Ivan Rakitic. The former Sevilla man had led his side to Europa League glory in that season.

Later Barcelona completed the transfer of Alexis Sánchez to Arsenal for 42 million euros. In July, Barcelona and English club Liverpool announced the transfer of Uruguayan international forward Luis Suárez for a reported fee of £75 million.

Barcelona announced the transfer of French international central defender Jérémy Mathieu from Valencia for a transfer fee of €20 million.

2) Magical Messi:-

The Argentine sensation had set his standards so high that he had a 'flop' 2013-14 season, despite scoring 41 goals and having 14 assists.

But this time around he set his record straight, having a 'normal' season by scoring 54 goals and 27 assists.

Playing Luis Suarez as a striker meant the 4-time Ballon d'or winner would play in a new position on the right wing. This allowed him to provide an amazing number of assists to his equally stupendous amount of goals.

3) Sublime Suarez:-

Although he had a subdued start to the season, the Uruguayan striker did live up to his name, scoring 24 goals and assisting almost the equal amount in his maiden season for the Catalan giants.

Suarez scored his first hat-trick for the club against their reverse fixture with Cordoba, when Barcelona ran riot, defeating them 8-0.

4) The "MSN Trio":-

Along with the two forwards, Messi and Suarez, the Brazilian sensation Neymar Jr. was unforgettable. The trio is now famously called MSN referring to Messi, Suarez, Neymar comparing them to Real Madrid's BBC, Bale, Benzema and Cristiano.

The MSN trio became the highest scoring trio in Barcelona history. They have 112 goals scored between them in a single season, which is extraordinary.

5) Player Fitness and Lack of injuries:-

Luis Enrique managed the side very well. Player rotations, giving chance to other players, meant that the number of injuries were restricted and players got enough time to rest and focus on fitness.

For instance, Enrique managed the rotation of his keepers very well. Marc-André ter Stegen was to keep for all the cup fixtures ie- Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League. Claudio Bravo was to keep for all league fixtures ie- La Liga matches. This gave enough time for both keepers to rest as well focus on the next game and on fitness.

In the reverse case, Real Madrid were plauged by injuries in the later stages of the League. Luka Modric, James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema were all hit by injuries. And Ancelotti couldn't find proper replacements for them.

These are just five of the numerous reasons which helped Barcelona secure their title.

With just one matchday left in La Liga, it's already party time for all Barcelona fans and the team. They will hope to win the last fixture and lift the trophy in style.
