After Mumbai football fans were denied I-League at the Cooperage in Mumbai this season, it seems that they will have to make do without Rovers Cup if the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) demands are not met.
Rovers Cup, slated for June after a gap of 12 years, looks in doubt as the Western India Football Association (WIFA) is yet to pay BMC its outstanding legal fee of Rs2.5 crore.
“We have settled all other issues. But this legal fee to the corporation has turned out to be the latest hurdle while we are trying to revive the championship,” said Henry Menezes, CEO of WIFA.
Now, WIFA is looking at prominent corporates to bail them out. “We are approaching some of the corporates and hopefully we should be able to manage the fee,” said Menezes.
Incidentally, this is the second time WIFA is trying to breathe new life into this championship. The previous instance was in 2007. However, it did not go beyond the paper work then.
