This Jadeja is also a cricketer...

Often we refer to the Wikipedia for any information on anything and everything on the earth, don’t we? Wikipedia’s profiles of popular personalities top the Google search.

However, their entries should not be considered as the final word on any subject. It can err too, as in the case of Ravindra Jadeja. Wikipedia could not get any more bizarre than the entry of Jadeja’s page, as www.cricketcountry.com found out on Monday.

Jadeja, a find in the ongoing Test series against Australia, was described as a philanthropist, Nobel Prize winner among others on his page. It read: “Ravindrasinh Anirudhsinh Jadeja (born 6 Dec 1988) is a philanthropist, a Nobel Prize winner, a double Laureus sportsman of the year, and the nearest human to being God. Other than that he is an Indian cricketer.”

The error has since been rectified. The thing about Wikipedia is that anyone in the world can edit it. Anyone can contribute to it. Cricketcountry.com said:
“...because a page is not moderated the moment it is being published, it can lead to erroneous entries. Even if the entries are moderated by the administrators as soon as they notice them, there is a possibility that several users can read — and get misled — by the article before they’re moderated.”

Though information on the Wikipedia is useful, it cannot be hundred per cent reliable. It could even be misleading at times. The website went on to add: “Of course, followers of the sport would have recognised that it was a hoax immediately, but what about those who do not follow cricket? How would they have reacted to misleading information of this sort? Remember, everyone comes to Wikipedia in search of unbiased knowledge — nothing more, nothing less — and if that is twisted, the purpose of the website is lost.”

So, next time you visit Wikipedia, do double check the facts. You know what happened in the case of Jadeja!
