Cameron Jerome shows his class to freeze Newcastle out despite Cisse strike

Cameron Jerome is growing tired of providing Tony Pulis with reminders but produced another nudge in the ribs for the Stoke manager as his goal extended the team's proud home record.

Jerome almost joined Blackburn on loan this month after becoming increasingly frustrated at a lack of opportunities and could still leave in the January transfer window.

But the substitute piled on the frustration for Newcastle and Alan Pardew with a strike five minutes from time, securing a 14th game unbeaten at Stoke's Britannia Stadium fortress.

Papiss Cisse has arguably epitomised Newcastle's struggles more than any of Pardew's underachievers this season and his second league goal of the season had appeared set to earn the visitors a first away win since May until two goals in four minutes dramatically swung the game.

It ensured another excruciating evening for Pardew, who is in danger of seeing all his outstanding work from last season forgotten.

Pardew had 11 players unavailable here, his injury crisis deepening with the loss of Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye until February.

Newcastle could have suffered more misfortune after 16 minutes when Glenn Whelan's exquisite free kick from the right created havoc in the box, with Danny Simpson's attempted clearance richocheting off Mike Williamson to hit the post.

Stoke's Britannia icebox remains one of the most difficult venues in the country to pilfer points, with Sunderland the last team to secure a successful raid back in February. But while their record of conceding only one goal at home before last night was the best in Europe's leading six leagues, scoring at the other end has also proven elusive.

Peter Crouch endured a frustrating evening isolated up front on his own before he was withdrawn five minutes before half-time after being caught in the face by Fabricio Coloccini in a dire first half of few chances.

Newcastle had hardly threatened but were ahead two minutes into the second period. Whelan was robbed by Cheick Tiote and the ball broke to Demba Ba whose shot was spilled by Asmir Begovic, and Cisse converted.

"Papiss Cisse, he scores when he wants," chirped the Newcastle supporters - but this was only his second league goal of the season. Cisse's strike partner Demba Ba could have increased their lead in the 64th minute but Begovic made a fine save.

Pulis fidgeted constantly in his technical area and finally made the changes his team were crying out for, bringing on Michael Kightly and Jerome. Begovic was pressed into another save from Ba, but Stoke levelled nine minutes from time when Walters nodded in Jerome's cross.

Jerome then displayed pace and power to race clear and beat Tim Krul from close range, underlining his unwanted reputation as Stoke's super-sub.
