The inspiration to build a temple for Lord Ganesha came to Sandhyatai Amrute after thirty years of dedicated worship. She used to visit the well known Ganesh temple at Morgaon-Panthi, near Pune and received divine orders fromthe Lord to establish a temple at Bhopargaon in Dombivli (East).

The appropriate place was identified and the Bhoomi Pooja was conducted on May 4, 2001. The service was presided over by Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and took place on Sandhyatai’s birthday. As the temple was built through contributions from volunteers, it was another four years before the construction could be completed.

The Mayureshwar temple was consecrated on May 11, 2005 coinciding with Akshay Trithi, an auspicious day. The idol was crafted in Hampi, Karnataka and weighed 311kg. The temple has been embellished with white marble from Makarana, Rajasthan and most of the skilled labourers who dedicated their efforts were Muslims.

The Mayureshwar temple is a complete place of worship with the presence of Navagraha, Naga the divine snake God, Mooshak, Nandi and the holy turtle.

The Mayureshwar Seva Mandal which manages the temple’s activities celebrates five major auspicious days by holding special prayer services. The annual festival is celebrated on May 11 to coincide with the day of the temple’s consecration. This event is called the Bhopar Festival and is celebrated with gaiety and pomp. The programme includes folk dances, traditional musical concerts and religious discourses.

The temple has been visited by celebrities and famous people from all walks of life. During a visit, if you are impressed by the cleanliness of the premises, the credit goes to a team of volunteers who dedicate their efforts to ensure that precincts are cleaned regularly. Mayureshwar temple accepts offerings only in form of dhurva and hibiscus flowers. Both areconsidered to be dear to the Lord.

According to legend Mayureshwar Ganesha loves jaggery and it is believed that the Lord grants the wishes of devotees who offer jaggery equivalent to the weight of the idol. The temple also provides personal counselling and spiritual discourses to devotees. Spreading spirituality with the blessings of Ganesha is the guiding principle of the Mayureshwar Seva Mandal.
