Mumbai: The trend of making home furnishings traditionally from a carpenter is slowly dying. People prefer the readymade furniture available in the stores. Right from wardrobes, dining tables, comfortable beds and the traditional aaram khursi (easy chair) made from teak wood. You name it and the kind of furniture is available in the outlets in varied colours.

Wood Mall is one such outlet in the city that has been serving local residents for more than three decades now. The store has different varieties of readymade furniture.
Ahmed Shaikh, general manger of the store said, "There are many reasons for which people now prefer to buy readymade furniture. It saves on time and also one doesn't need to imagine the furniture till the time it is finished by a traditional carpenter."

He added, "People can come to the store and match different furniture at a time and one can have the fixtures at their doorstep the next day."Today people want everything readymade as they want to avoid the arduous process of a carpenter working in their home. It disturbs their peace and tranquillity. Therefore readymade furniture is one of the easiest and quickest means of decorating a home comfortably. Shaikh also informed, "Readymade fittings are affordable since we import the furniture in bulk."

This has affected the business of traditional worksmen. Phoolchand Mistry, a traditional carpenter from Thakurli says, "I have been doing this business since eight years and I could see the changing trend. Today people need everything quickly therefore even we try to make furniture within a shorter timeframe."

He added, "Usually, we make furniture at our store and just fix it at the customer's place, so that there is no inconvenience."
