World leaders must take global warming seriously

The human race is considered as the most intelligent species because of its ability to think and innovate. The human race is known for pioneering discoveries and their ability to solve complex problems and make the world a better place.

Our intervention in the field of medicine eradicated many diseases, which were thought to be incurable, we overcame the great divide between different races and tackled the financial crisis of 1930s and that of 2008. But all these accomplishments and capabilities of man seem to be worthless, when we see that top leaders of 190 countries attending the biggest conference in the world are favouring the individual interest of their countries.

Leaders seem to be flippant about the crisis of global warming that mankind is facing.
Selfish and unexpected attitude of world leaders particularly that of the developed nations turned the Copenhagen Summit into a political circus and a mockery of science. The threat of climate change is much worse and devastating than events such as a terror strike, nuclear attack, war or the spread of an epidemic. In fact what makes climate change, so deadly is that it can be a starting point and can lead to all the other events.

It was clearly put forth by former World Bank chief Nicolas Stern in his report - The Stern Review in 2006 that cost of controlling global warming will be less than the cost of not doing so.

It is well known to the world that the developed nations are responsible for the pollution, which they had created in the past. Hence the onus lies on them to take big steps to cut their carbon emissions and leading by example ask developing nations to do their part.
At the summit, the world waited for Barack Obama’s action to tackle climate change. But instead of taking strong action, he paid lip service to the world despite winning a Nobel Peace Prize, this year.

The manner in which rich and poor nations were fighting at the conference clearly demonstrates the words of David Suzuki who said, “We all are in a giant vehicle moving towards a brick wall and everyone is fighting where to sit.”

The Copenhagen climate summit ended in just a note of the accord instead of a much expected strong legally binding agreement.

It is a big mystery why global warming is still considered a myth and not taken seriously even after visible consequences. The world’s apex body on climate change - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and many other organisations have but forth their reports stating the obvious nature and future consequences of global warming, but still the denial of this phenomenon persists.
