Mumbai: W omen's group have started a new concept of vegetable stalls in and around residential blocks in Mulund. The concept is certainly a benchmark for clean and fresh vegetables at an affordable price.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) T-ward has permitted five vegetable stalls in Mulund East for women associated with Mahila Bachat Gat who don't have any other source of income.
Stalls are placed near the residential areas like Shahani Colony, Palm Acres Society, Jai Ganesh Talkies and Gawanpada. These vegetable stalls are operational for the past one and a half month and are open during morning and evening hours.
"We get vegetables from Vashi market at a discounted rate and then sell it here in Mulund. Residents purchase vegetables from our stall since we stock fresh and clean vegetables and that too at a cheaper price," added Jyoti Gorke, 36, who runs a vegetable stall at Palm Acres CHS and is the only earning member in her family.
Earlier Jyoti worked as a domestic help, but since she has been allotted the vegetable stall, she has also developed business skills. "Though the vegetables are costly these days, we have to sell it at lower cost, so that we get enough customers. It is the quality and the discounted cost due to which we are able to gain a hold in the market," added Lata Kamble, 45. Kamble has a family of three members and the money earned from the sale of vegetables is her main source of income, she has set up her stall at Shahani Colony.
"These women are not educated because of which they cannot go out and seek jobs in the formal sector. Therefore, they seek jobs as domestic helps and earn little money," said Ratan Gore, a social work who looks after the Mahila Bachat Gat in which 150 women are employed. Radhika Ranawat, a buyer said, "We get fresh vegetables near our house at a reasonable rate."
