Why has Gateway become a living quarters for cops?

The government needs to pay more attention to the needs of the police force. Basic needs and amenities are every human being’s right and if they are not provided then it will hurt their confidence and self-respect. If police are not happy then it will affect their work. If the welfare measures are not implemented then where is the money allocated to police welfare going?
—Melissa D’Mello

I’m not surprised with the treatment meted out to our policemen. It is this lack of respect that drives them towards corruption. We must not forget that they are there to protect us and they should be respected for that. Also, this will show Mumbai and India in a bad light, since Gateway is visited by foreign tourists. It is ironic that all this is happening when people are coming to the city to pay homage to victims and the policemen who died in theNovember 26 terror attacks.
—Deepak Patil

The state doesn’t care about the police. It’s evident from the fact that they are not given amenities to live decently. They have to protect themselves from heat and rain while doing their duty. They should be provided portable cabins. It is in the responsibility of the government to take care of the people who are ready to lay down their lives for our safety.

If the government cared about the police, then the bullet-proof jackets would have helped to shield our officers. They have purchased jackets of an inferior quality and passed them off as bullet-proof ones. Even otherwise the state must give them decent accommodation. They can be accommodated in a small guest house in the vicinity. We need to change the way our forces are treated. Proper infrastructure and a personnel management machinery to look into their grievances is needed.
—Pratik Bansal

Gateway of India is a landmark and making it a dormitory for policemen is not only showing disrespect to them, but also to the monument. There is no doubt that our policemen adopt corrupt paths, we cannot treat them like this. They need better pay, facilities and a better management system. They also need respect not only from the government but also from the common man.
