Why can’t we produce another Tendulkar?

It is great to read that Sachin Tendulkar has completed two decades of international cricket. Many draw great pride from them. It is commendable that Sachin has reached this milestone. But on this occasion we need to pose some questions.

Why do our bureaucratic sports administrators fail to value other sports? Also, why couldn’t we produce another Tendulkar in the arena of sports during the last twenty years?

It may sound trite to some, but the bitter truth is that we have neglected other sports; cricket, which is played by few countries, dominates our playgrounds. Other sportspersons are always found to be pleading with administrators for adequate training facilities, while cricketers are gifted with plots to built villas.

Cricketers have trainers like psychologists, batting and fielding instructors, while some innocent women wrestlers are falsely implicated in doping scandal and the sports authority leaves them to fend for themselves. Recently a newspaper reported that a national hockey player had to take to begging to fend for herself.

Even cricket administrators have been so bureaucratic that we fail to capitalise on identifying talent from small towns. We miss the opportunity to have another Sachin Tendulkar. We have witnessed some great talent fade into oblivion.
