Mumbai: It was touted as the next big thing in the world of recruitment, but only two years after video resumes dawned on to the corporate scene globally, the concept is passe.

Two years ago, it wasn't enough to be the right man for the job. The buzz in the global corporate scene was to prove your mettle on camera. Video resumes caught the imagination of Indian head hunters too, who felt that candidates explaining what they do on video was more convincing than bloated paper resumes.

Today, it's back to the well-drafted paper resume. "The technology has not delivered on the initial promise. Video CVs did look like the next big thing in recruitment two years ago, but currently barring a few specialised fields like training in the Information Technology enabled services (ITeS) sector no one is keen on a Video CV," says Surabhi Gandhi, head, tech sourcing, Team Lease.

A typical two to three minute video CV has a short clip of the candidate talking about himself and his work profile. This is followed by short relevant clips of his work. A candidate can either upload the video on a job search site or send the employer a CD with the video. The sad part is, it's no longer cool. "The sheer amount of time that a client will have to spend in screening the video CVs discourages most," said Rajan Kaicker, executive chairman, Franklin Covey India and South Asia.

He added, "He will also want to know how the candidate plans to add value to the client's enterprise. In a number of instances, a client prefers a video conference with the candidate but that is quite different from a video CV."

A spokesperson for mosterindia.com, the only Indian job search portal to launch a video channel for hosting video, says, "This product is of immense help to ITeS and service industry in particular where communication skills of a candidate are the pre-requisite for a job."
