I’m staying in a high-rise apartment, which is equipped with fire safety equipment. We all know that safety measures have been taken by builders, but I’m not sure if this is enough. Metro rail construction between Versova to Ghatkopar is being done without even proper permission of the fire department comes as a shock. This shows that there is no co-ordination among the government authorities.—Bhavik Panchmatiya
Not just Mumbai, even a city constructed with planning like Navi Mumbai is not well equipped with fire safety measures. There are scant fire brigade personnel in Panvel, where I stay. Anyone can imagine the situation when any fire breaks out. Recently fire accident in Thane has already revealed, how equipped ourfire department is and the shortage of manpower. —Rupesh Yadav
I’m aware of fire safety measures which are required in any residential building. My complex is equipped with all the equipment, these are the essential elements people consider, while buying a flat. Our fire brigade department must be equipped with all modern implements. It is absolute negligence on the part of the government not to consult the fire safety department at the construction site of the Metro Rail. Who will be responsible, in case any untoward incident takes place?
—Pankaj Jain
There is fire fighting equipment like ropes and ladders in the buildings. But these aren’t enough tools to tackle a disaster. The government is not concerned about the people. Small accidents can be avoided because buildings follow safety measures, but government must be well equipped with all the modern technologies. Mumbai has tall buildings and so it is an unnecessary risk, if we don’t modernise fire department. —Mayuri Talim
Safety measures are not taken seriously in the city. Both the government and builders are shirking their responsibility. Builders keep some fire safety equipment to seek an approval from the BMC, which is not good. It is required to have many fire brigade stations near densely populated areas, since vehicles mustn’t lose time in travel. At the time of emergency, the fire department needs to reach fast within minutes.—Yogesh Deshpande
