Gender-based view may create rifts
Essentially, we must look at the reservation bill in isolation. However, the same criterion shouldn’t persist in case of employment. The authorities must engage in the process of resolving of the current unemployment crisis, rather than in creating rifts among masses by bringing out proposals, which relate to gender-based recruitment process.

Manage facility with clear guidelines
Sudden decisions that are not given due thought can lead to strong repercussions. Women’s groups can manage the lots provided, clear guidelines are laid out. Security issues, civic amenities around the parking lots are also immediate concerns. If these systems can be put in place and ad-hocism is curtailed, it might be feasible and an important employment avenue.

Start a pilot project and gauge results
I think it is a very good step that the Congress has envisaged. Activities like promoting women’s self help groups will reap dividends in the long run. But I agree with the comment of opposition leader Rajhans Singh. The Mumbai civic corporation is a role model for so many other civic bodies. If other municipal corporations can dole out such contracts to help women self-help groups, why can’t we experiment with it?

Will help them supplement income
Women are proficient in organisation and planning. Giving them the responsibility of managing parking lots will be a good initiative. Plus it will help them to supplement their income, which they can use wisely for future financial planning for their family. Yes, they should hand over the mandate to firms owned by women or contractors which employ them.

Such steps will promote empowerment
I’m in favour of anything that is done for women empowerment. Such measures by the civic body should be supported. At the same time, transparency is necessary for activities undertaken, it’s important that we have a fair and credible system. Incorporating women for any role has its demerits and merits. Giving them the contracts will be a good measure.
