Hate politics initiated by Raj Thackeray and fanned by Abu Azmi has claimed some lives in Maharastra. The Dubey brothers - Omprakash and Mayur who were killed in Dombivli in October 2008 by MNS people were residents of Maharastra. Surviving members of their family had to migrate to their native place and not a single party has made any effort to console them.
Policemen who were present there at the time of murder have got away scot-free, along with the people who were responsible for the crime. People have started making racist remarks about North Indians on any pretext all over Maharashtra. Even the state police are not above making such comments. When North Indians go and complain about threats and intimidation, constables taunt them and on occasions ask them, why they don’t go back to “their homeland”. Even peace-loving Maharastrian individuals have been swept by the xenophobia, while small-time traders and vendors are facing the brunt of this chauvinism. It’s time regionalism must be curbed or else we may face a civil war between different linguistic groups.
