One more drowning death has been reported, this time in a swimming pool in Andheri. This is clearly a case of negligence and there is a need for introspection. The drowning incident has crippled a family. Such incidents have been occurring for sometime now, especially during weekends and holidays. The regular rate of fatalities - more than 25 deaths during the last six months - is cause for worry.

Unless there are lifeguards and adequate rescue equipment, swimming pools shouldn’t be given permission to operate. Parents sending their children to these dangerous spots are having sleepless nights. They recurrently fear that their wards will come across a serious mishap.

Alibagh beach was a death trap. Aksa beach is also a dangerous spot and regularly claims young swimmers.

Picnickers have to take all precaution and see that lifeguards are available before entering sea water.

In the last incident, sand caved in and victims were dragged in, resulting in instant death. It is quite possible that such incidents taking place because of careless attitude of persons going to these spots.

Parents have to advise their children not to undertake such ventures alone. It is time to put barricades and boards prominently to instruct people not to cross the limit.

At some places, the water current is extremely powerful and even lifeguards will think twice before venturing into the sea. The media should highlight the risk factor, so that our future generation can be warned. Local doctors should be available near the spot to give first-aid and other medicine to rescued swimmers.

Resurrection and resuscitation can revive some of them. Those living near the coast can be taught these techniques, so that they can help in rescue operations.
