How do you make your child happy? You provide the kids with good toys. Research has also proved that children learn cognitive behaviour and creativity through the right kind of toys.
But every child is not so lucky to get good toys due to poverty. When parents work hard to make ends meet, and give them a decent education, they sometimes feel that toys are a needless expenditure.
A NGO has shouldered the task of providing the essential contraptions to the underprivileged children. In August 2004, Shweta Chari founded ‘Toybank’ with seven associates to collect playthings from donors and give it to children who cannot afford to buy expensive toys. “When I gave away the toys wrapped in a gift pack, children become happy. The impact was beyond expectation. Children began to recognise that recreation was their birthright. They also began expressing themselves better,” informed Chari
The first experience buoyed Shweta Chari and her associates to formally institute an organisation. They decided to disseminate toys directly to the poor or route them through NGOs after collecting them from donors. Vikram Nerurkar, an IT engineer by profession, helped in constructing a website for Toy Bank. He still takes care of the logistics operation and finance.Corporate offices and school children play a big role in collecting the toys, which are handed over to the Toy Bank.
