Borivali: A meagre strength of people today are aware of the traditional and cultural facets of their own nation or state. The Warli tribal artists are in the city to educate Mumbaikars about the almost fading tribal art.

According to Vedvyas Katti, President, Rangvalli Parivar, there are nearly 300 tribal artists in Thane district, each having his unique style of painting. Every painting is a compilation of geometric designs, stripes and shapes that form a recognisable figure of a human, an animal or an element of nature.

The institute seeks to carry the image of tribal social life down to the masses, through its various programmes. "We had entries from the age group of eight to 80 years who participated in the workshop. The art lovers enjoyed learning this art and were surprised that they could learnthis beautiful tribal art in just a day's time,"says Vedvyas.

Since eight years the group has been conducting one day workshops, with almost 60 participants in each session. Warli painting is not restricted to walls, but also adorns greeting cards, pots, frames with an ethnic touch to any surroundings. This tribal art has finally come out of the region and people are appreciating the simplicity of it. The artists are now trying to experiment with more colours and focusing on the traditional form of development.

"Rangvalli Parivar is an institute devoted to awareness and affection for art forms specific to Indian culture, like Rangoli and Warli paintings," says Ajit Dighe, coordinator, Western region, Rangvalli Parivar.Warli paintings on paper have become very popular and are now sold all over India. The art is modernised to some extent and are nowadays done on cloth and paper but they look best on the walls or in the form of huge murals that bring out the vast formation of the Warlis. Like any other art form, for the Warlis too, traditional aspects are present with simultaneous innovations seeping in freely.

The workshop was recently conducted at Suvidyalay High School, Borivali. To know more about the Warli painting workshop contact: 09820414823 / 25415545
