Mumbai: If you are member of any of the popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut and Myspace, and you log on to your homepage, it will be bombarded with your friends new updated status messages expressing their grief over the death of King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Rahul M, a media professional says, "I was fast asleep and was pinged on my blackberry. A friend of mine had just updated his status MJ you are simply the best, on twitter paying his last respect to the great legend."
Rahul's friend was not the only one to quickly update his status. Like him, there were others too who had logged on to pay their homage. We miss you MJ, RIP MJ, I miss your moonwalk etc. These are few of the status updates that one can see on these sites.
Now days social networking sites are not only a medium to find your old friends but also a medium to express ones thoughts on a particular issue or news that has greatly touch their hearts.
Priya Trivedi a college student admits, "People are very active on these networking sites. Even during the Mumbai terror attack I saw all my friends updating their status messages and showing their support towards the city and the victims. So I didn't find it weird when I saw my friends' status messages on MJ's death."
It's not just the messages that one observes that keeps getting updated but also the communities on these sites that have witnessed a large number of people joining the group. R.I.P Michael Jackson (We Miss You) was created and within 24 hours it had more than one lakh fans and the number is still rising. The group is aiming to make this the biggest page on facebook and asking fans to spread the message among their friends to join the community.
Twitter too has its own communities, RIP and Michael Jackson, where the members have updated their status expressing their sorrow and grief. Not only are the status being updated but also friends commenting on these statuses which also gives an insight of how many people are active online. Some have even gone to an extend of changing their profile picture with Michael Jackson's photograph.
Michael had always been a global icon and revolutionised the way people listened to music. His fan base had no age barrier and from 15 to 50 year olds are mourning on these social networking sites.
