Mumbai: Mayawati defended government's decision to construct memorials, statues, and museums dedicated toBR Ambedkar and Bahujan Samaj Party founder late Kanshi Ram

Mayawati till date has misused crores of rupees of public money for installing statues of herself and other Dalit leaders like Dr Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the party's elephant symbol. I am shocked how such huge amount of money that can be put to better use has just been wasted.
--Pranesh Acharya

The Supreme Court should rap ministers like Mayawati who are spending crores from the tax payer's money to build statues of elephants and her mentor as well. Wouldn't it help if the same amount of money was spent on education, infrastructure and public welfare programs?
--Alpa Bhavsar

Mayawati is self obsessed and has a fetish of installing her own statues. Such behavior is not justified. The way Mayawati spends money on statues shows the extent to which our politicians go to glorify themselves. The judiciary has to take steps to stop leaders from self glorification.
--Rahul Nigam

Uttar Pradesh is one of India's most deprived states. I am sure there are better ways to use the money than build statues. Many politicians have openly condemned Mayawati's actions. But right now action is required rather than just condemn her behavior.
--Hemal Rajgor

P Chidambaram's commented, 'There be something more shameful than this in Indian politics' referring toexpenses incurred by Mayawati in erecting statues. But Congress and its first family are responsible for setting the tune for such cacophony in Indian politics. Congresshas named major government programmes, projects and institutions in India after members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
--P Ravindran

Mayawati's behaviour isn't justified and Supreme Court should certainly be harsh on her. She claims that she hasn't curtailed the budgets for education, roads and health. But using the same amount of money for the betterment of people would have helped rather than seeing statues on every other road in Uttar Pradesh.
--Asif Lakhani

I read somewhere that in the last week alone she unveiled 15 new memorials, including two of herself. I don't understand the relevance of this at all. People will remember and her name will go down in history by the deeds that she has done, not the number of statues installed by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
--Veena Dave

The Supreme Court needs to do more than just sending notice to Mayawati. By spending Rs 1500 crores on constructing statues is a mockery of the states and country's developmental status. During financial crisis in the world how can she think of spending the amount on such useless and lifeless statues.
--Gereald Lawsree

It is sad that despite her spending crores of rupees on statues, she still remains the CM of Uttar Pradesh. She should be expelled as her deeds itself show that she is hardly interested in the development of her state. We cannot afford to spend the money on lifeless structures.
