While we are all born equal, everyone’s life takes shape according to the person’s dream when they are moulded by an experienced teacher. Good guidance and teaching helps individuals attain great heights. But how many remain in touch with their teachers and have expressed their gratitude towards them?
Often we step out of schools carrying fond memories with us, but is that enough?
One has seen awards instituted for film stars, sport persons or businessmen. But have we got the opportunity to vote for our favourite teacher at an all-India level?
But now there is an opportunity to rectify the same with the ‘Guruvar Awards 2009’ through which you can nominate your teacher, who you think has contributed to shaping and moulding your life and perspective.
You can nominate teachers right from primary to high school level across India. There are various categories where you can honour your teachers with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, ‘Outstanding Indian Teacher’, ‘Outstanding Young Indian Teacher’ and ‘Outstanding Indian Teacher of children with special needs’.
The total prize money for the award is Rs2 crore and it will be divided among 48 teachers equally.
Professionals nominated to the award must be teachers and principals from a recognised higher secondary school with a CBSE, ICSE or state government board curriculum.
“It’s a one-of-its-kind initiative wherein there are no representatives or bodies who will select teachers or recommend them,” said Sunny Murthy, founder of Verky Gems Foundation.
He added, “Every citizen is invited to be a part of this effort and use this as a platform to voice their individual opinion. They will be able to acknowledge their teacher’s contribution towards shaping their lives. Teachers are shaping the future of the country and it is our endeavour to recognise their efforts.”
Deterioration in the standards of instructors has lead to a weakening of the education system. “This award is aimed as a catalyst to promote teaching as a preferred profession among youngsters in India,” added Murthy.
Nominations for the same begun in mid-September and the last date for the nomination is November 15.
