Has the ruckus over Marathi sullied our image?

If other legislators could take oath in Marathi why can’t Abu Azmi do the same? Raj Thackeray had given a prior warning and threatened to unleash violence in the assembly, if he took oath in Hindi. So Azmi should have been prepared for the assault. With the entire Thackeray clan rallying against Azmi, the assembly may further see some unsavoury moments.
—Hemant Parab

Hindi is the national language and taking oath in the same shouldn’t be a problem. However, Azmi has been residing in Maharashtra since many years, so he ought to know the language of the state. Being an legislator, he should have given it a try. At the same time, this doesn’t imply that MNS MLAs can create a ruckus during the oath taking ceremony. Violence should be definitely avoided.

This was bound to happen. Such incidents don’t surprise people. The question about anyone relenting doesn’t arise as both are quite staunch in their approach. What is important is that this will continue happening in future as well. This is because there is not much action taken against those who create any kind of ruckus. Such incidents create a bad image of Indian politics and politicians. We still fail to see the larger issues and continue bickering over trivial matters

It seems as if there is no stopping the MNS menace. I fail to understand how no serious action has been taken yet despite the nuisance, which they keep raking up at regular intervals. Abu Azmi did not commit any crime by taking oath in Hindi. It is the national language and one cannot be forced to take an oath in Marathi. Resorting to such tactics and violence in the august assembly is shameful.—Amrita Mondal

Violence and hostile behaviour have become synonymous with MNS’ way of functioning. Both Abu Azmi and Raj Thackeray are fundamentalists, and are going to stick to their stand without any of them relenting. But the house marshals present in the assembly could have intervened and stopped the scuffle. This being the first session of the new assembly, probably everyone was caught off guard.
