Don’t leave your pet on the mean streets

While we have witnessed rescue situations by teams during times of natural calamities on television channels, we never imagine ourselves in the rescuer’s shoes, due to paucity of courage or lack of knowledge about rescue operations. I came across a similar situation last week. One night while returning home at about 10.20 pm, I saw a white labrador dog (see pic) hounded by nine strays. Unable to bear the labrador’s agony, I jumped in with the intention of rescuing the poor dog and drove the other strays away.

Since the labrador was completely shaken, I decided to calm him down and decided to walk him around for about 20 minutes, thinking that the intelligent dog will find its owner.
I soon realised that the dog wasn’t looking for its owner, but instead it seemed thirsty and hungry and was actually sniffing around to quench its thirst. Instead of leaving the dog on the street again, I took it to home. Here another drama unfolded, members of the society tried to stop me from getting the dog into the premises. After much pleading I was allowed to keep the dog for a night.

Next morning, I went to the police station and informed them about the incident. The police informed me that they didn’t have any complaint about a missing dog.
They advised me that I could either keep the dog or find someone who could adopt the pet. They only cautioned me to take the person’s address and contact details, but surprisingly they didn’t take down my details, in case someone came looking for the dog. A suitable guardian was found for the dog - a businessman from Borivli (name withheld on request). Most owners do not even realise that their pedigreed dogs are not welcomed on the streets by the other dogs. They will completely be at the mercy of nature, if lost.
