Does internet merit the coveted Nobel?

Published: Friday, Feb 5, 2010, 0:51 IST

It sounds bizarre. What will happen to all activists who work for peace and harmony? I don’t agree that the internet is a powerful force for peace, since there are numerous sites hatred than forums for betterment of society. In India too, we use internet as a medium for connectivity and business enhancement than as a tool of evolution of
society.

Recently there have been many controversies surrounding one of the most reputed international awards. I believed that the award was given to people and not organisations. The award given to Barack Obama got a lot of flak from people. Internet has played a major role in our lives, but I don't see any connection between cyberspace and peace efforts.

It's amusing and weird to hear about this nomination. The reach of internet is huge but it can’t be even related to promoting peace, whatever grounds are cited by officials. In the online sphere there is enough know-how to make bombs and weapons of mass destruction. There is evidence how technology has been widely misused by terrorists across the world. Maps, location or details of any person is freely available.

Although online tools have got the world closer, it is too soon to award the Nobel Peace prize to the internet. If used effectively, internet can become a powerful tool for peace, because of its limitless reach. However, this reason can go against the cause. The information is accessible to everyone and it can be interpreted in many ways.

It’s a magnificent idea to felicitate the internet, which is a revolutionary tool. According to Alfred Nobel, the peace prize was to be given to those who contributed and worked for the fraternity across the globe. Internet has the capacity and dynamism which makes it a powerful tool for peace. The exposure provided by the service for opinion and promotion has a vast reach.
