According to statistics, only one in 69 rape cases in India are reported. Only 20% of those reported, result in a conviction for the rape accused.
These are some startling facts to which many have become immune now. Deep down there is anger among us, whenever we read about any rape or molestation case but still somehow feel helpless regarding what one can do.
Most of the cases go unreported because women fear that they will get a bad name and they will ruin the name of their family. This is because whenever a girl is raped, she is blamed the most, the most frequently repeated queries are; she must be wearing revealing clothes or must have led to some provocation. “I would feel devastated and helpless whenever I read about a new case about sexual harassment against women. For many years I wanted to do something and then suddenly I thought that the best way to help victims is to give guidance to other women on how to prevent the same,” said Aroona Reejhsinghani who is a prolific writer and founder of Authors Association of India.
She started her odyssey to find out case studies, which she should include in the book. She wants the tome to help a woman in some way. Some chapters included in the book are: How to deal with molestation, avoiding molestation at work place, avoiding stalkers, how to avoid pitfalls of dating, one night stands, uncomfortable contact, extra-martial relationship, teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and abortion. “So far of the 200 books, that I have written in my career as a writer, I believe that this is one of my best works,” said Aroona.
She added, “Through this book, if I’m able to save even a single girl from the great cruelty, I think I have achieved something. This book will be distributed free to every woman. It will be my contribution to society.”
Presently there are limited copies of the book due to lack of resources. But Aroona is hopeful that some philanthropist will come forward and help her with the finance to print more copies of the book and in many more languages.
Aroona has to her credit 150 titles and has achieved the distinction of writing 125 books on a single subject - cookery. She also has a mention in the Limca Book of Records for having authored books on diverse subjects.
Her book for women titled How to Prevent Rape and Molestation, will be out by November.
