Celeb privacy vs public comfort

Personalities are not important, issues are
There has been unnecessary tension created over the Peddar Road flyover without actually understanding the crux of the issue. There is too much traffic in the area andjust building a flyover is not the solution. We should rather focus on extending the Bandra-Worli sea link till Haji Ali. It’s important that we don’t take up wrong projects for wrong reasons.

For the clearance of traffic, Peddar Road flyover is not the answer. Have they planned how they will divert the traffic? First, the authorities need to give us a complete plan, have a public debate, weigh the pros and cons and then accordingly go ahead with the project. The young people of the city, who will be using these projects, need to be considered. Not just people residing at Peddar Road, but the whole city should benefit from any such project.

Let’s not make the celebrities easy targets. Personalities are not important, it is the issues that are more important. According to me, the mass rapid transport system — metro or underground metro rail is the solution.

Look at the benefit of the larger society
With all due respect to celebrities, the development projects should not be hindered for the convenience of few people. We need to look at the larger picture here. How beneficial a Metro project would be for the city? Our roads need to be decongested and such infrastructure projects should be welcomed. We all have to compromise somewhere and I think the Peddar Road flyover, too, should come up. Such projects would help thousands of people and hence we need to go ahead with their construction. Also, the authorities willbe careful about issues concerning invasion of peoples’ privacy.

Privacy would be invaded, but it’s ok
I don’t think it is wrong on Amitabh Bachchan’s part to oppose the construction. Our home is our own private space, a dream which everyone would like to protect. The metro would be running at least 16-18 hours and would cause a lot of noise and disturbance. But keeping the overall benefits of the project to the society, Bachchan should accept it with a pinch of salt. Any change is not welcomed and this is applicable to urban development also. We should understand that things have to be changed to make them better and this would cause some temporary problems.

He has the right to express his views
I agree that celebrities, in the past, have opposed or shown their disappointment with some construction work going on near their house. However, I don’t think Amitabh Bachchan is wrong in expressing his views on the metro rail coming up near his house. His house will be under threat of not only noise pollution and dirt, but also a terror attack. He’s not saying that it shouldn’t be constructed at all. All of us have a right to express our views. And, as for the people, we all know and agree that for the development of the city, we have to compromiseour privacy.
Sonam Jain, Opera House

For betterment, we all have to compromise
We too have privacy like celebrities do, but as Mumbaikars we have learn to become tolerant for the better good. Celebrities need to try and get over such issues and learn to live like the rest of us. Bachchan needed something to write about in his blog and decided to target the metro because I don't know how he's going to be affected, given the luxurious life he lives. For the betterment, we all need to compromise. If we want to see Mumbai evolve as a world-class business hub, we need to stand by the government and support them in the development they bringing about.
