“Bhajan is imbued with the divinity to change the society. Bhajan ras can seep into the hearts and bring back the pristine attribute of goodness that’s somehow gone missing.
Anup Jalota said in an exclusive interview to DNA hours before the worldwise release of a bhajan album Giridhar Ke Rang, a Virgin-EMI release on Monday, set to tune by the bhajan samrat. The album marks the foray of young singer Preety Bhalla into devotional music. The album has eight tracks, of which six solos have been sung by Preety and Jalota, other than two duets.
The album pays tribute to ace tabla exponent Pandit Giridhar Prasad Jaipurwale, who was also a talented singer and lyricist. “When I took the bhajans written by Giridharjee to Anupjee, he was thrilled. The name itself ensconces the memory of the multi-faceted genius.” What struck Preety as awe-inspiring in Jalota is his spontaneity of composition.
“He can come up with tunes in a flash, those that transport you to the mellifluous days of yore.”
“I have made Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Mahendra Kapoor sing bhajans. Bhajans haven’t and can’t ever lose its sheen. From the days of Aisi laagi lagan in the early ‘80s till date, where there are at least five TV channels devoted to devotional music. I am glad I have contributed my little bit to this divine musical journey.”
