It is expected that the metro rail will be ready by the year 2014. However some questions still remain to be answered.
Two metro projects are approved and under construction. The third route between Colaba-Bandra is yet to get clearances. I believe, this route is the most crucial one since it will take lakhs of people (using the western railway now) daily to South Mumbai, where unfortunately most of the offices and business centres are still located.
This route should have got the clearance first. Similarly, observing the three routes, one can see that there is no metro rail plan for people using the Central Railway network. Their only solace is the Ghatkopar-Versova link. But will this help the frustrated travellers
going daily either to CST or Churchgate in any way?
The basic objective of the metro rail network was to reduce pressure on Harbour, Central and Western rail networks and arterial road links. If the metro rail is planned in a logical way, many commuters will stop using vehicles to travel to South Mumbai. The benefits to commuters will be reduced congestion on roads. Reduced fuel consumption by vehicles will bring down pollution levels significantly. Indian companies must take the challenge and complete the projects on time and ensure quality. If they can’t, contracts must be awarded to reputed global companies with proven track record.
