Real estate
Affordable housing holds the key

The year 2009 was a threshold year for the sector. The whole industry showed courage and stood by each other during downfall. Even the stimulus packages by the government helped us to survive. The global meltdown made us think of innovative ideas like affordable housing, which was helped by the State Bank of India with the 8% home loan scheme. More private builders are now venturing into it.

All indicators are positive, so it should be a good year for real estate. We hope there aren’t any sudden shocks in the Indian or international markets. But developers should keep in mind that increasing prices won’t help them to sustain the growth. Real estate is the largest source of employment. So if the industry does well, so will the employment scene. Even pay hike has been initiated for the skilled labourers. The government shouldn’t disregard the sector and should help with the stimulus package for at least eight months from now.

Media marketing
Social networking will boom further

In the coming year, cellular networks will gain in social networking. People will start using mobile phones extensively for social networking needs. Fall in rates, tough competition between mobile service providers and anticipated 3G spectrum will fuel this growth. There will be an explosion of interest-basedgroups - feng shui lovers, animal activists or bibliophiles will all come together. With the proliferation of mobile networks, more people will be accessing the ancillary services.

Till now, mobiles are known for ‘coolness quotient’, they will move to the realm of utility. More celebrities will start engaging with their fans online. They will use the mobile for promoting causes close to their heart and not only movies. From a business perspective, it would become micro-targeting, mass-personalisation and interest based profiling of users. Hence demographic profiling of users would be passe. Facebook and Twitter will stagnate and the next big thing will be foursquare.com.
