I was shocked to read about the incident in which a US woman was attacked by a man with a blade, in the first class compartment on a suburban train on Sunday evening.
I feel concerned about the woman who has suffered and wonder what impression she will carry with her about our city.
Such incidents occur regularly in the absence of the police. But the police will excuse themselves saying they have a shortage of staff. People would not mind paying a rupee more if it could help to improve safety. Motormen should not start the train without getting a confirmation of the presence of police personnel in the women’s compartments.
Also, why not shift the position of the women’s compartment to near the motorman’s or guard’s cabins, so that these officials are alerted about such incidents at the earliest. Installing CCTV systems in the train would be helpful also.
