Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, who has enthralled hundreds of millions over the past six decades, turns 80. Lata, who first broke into the public consciousness with the haunting melody Aayega Aanewaala from the superhit film Mahal (1949) starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala, is today considered the greatest playback singer of Indian cinema.
Lata, India's Nightingale, has won every conceivable award there is, from the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 to the country's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001.
With more than 50,000 songs to her credit, she has featured in the Guinness Book of Records for the highest number of recordings. Popularly known in India's film industry as Latadidi, she is the only artiste to have sung in 36 languages, including English, Russian, Dutch, Fijian, and Swahili. Her only wish is to continue singing till her last breath.
