The Congress and the BJP today clashed over the findings of the Liberhan Commission, which is believed to have indicted senior BJP leaders Atal Behari Vajpayee, LK Advani and MM Joshi among others, for the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992.
Justice MS Liberhan, who submitted his findings to the government on June 30 this year after an inquiry spanning 17 years, has stated that the entire build-up to the demolition was meticulously planned.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that for nearly two decades, the nation knew what had happened and how senior functionaries of a political party “joyously” watched people causing destruction and mayhem and then shed “crocodile tears”.
BJP president Rajnath Singh today accused the government of “selectively leaking” the contents of the Liberhan Commission report to the media, to “polarise' votes ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections. The BJP also said this has been done to “divert attention from core issues” like corruption and rising prices.
Home minister P Chidambaram's assurance in both Houses that the report, along with an Action Taken Report (ATR) would be tabled in this session itself failed to pacify the agitated members.
Is it more important to find out why the Liberhan Committee report was leaked and by whom, or to take those indicted to task?
