How important is a candidate’s religion to you?

Despite electoral laws prohibiting such campaigns, parties continue to appeal to religious sentiments in elections.

Some appeal to people to vote for a particular candidate because he or she subscribes to a certain religion and will work for its adherents. Others appeal to voters NOT to vote for a particular candidate because he or she subscribes to another religion.

The BSP candidate in Mumbai North-Central has gone a step further, urging Muslim voters to stay away from Congress candidate Priya Dutt because her husband is supposedly a Jew. How much of an influence do you think such appeals have on voter behaviour? Would religion/community be an important factor in deciding your vote?
