Fourteen-year-old Ruchika Girhotra was allegedly molested by former Haryana director general of police SPS Rathore between 1990 and 1993. After being harassed by Rathore for three years, Girhotra committed suicide.
In 2003, the supreme court upheld the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order for a CBI inquiry into the case.
Now, nearly two decades later, Rathore has been convicted for molesting the minor and has been awarded six months' imprisonment and fined Rs1,000. He can also appeal for bail.
Is this punishment enough, after the hell Rathore put Ruchika through? Has justice been done?
Correction, December 21, 2009: The headline has been changed to 'Haryana cop gets 6 months' jail, Rs1,000 fine for molesting teen who later committed suicide. Is this punishment enough?'
