A 30-year-old American woman working with the Clinton Foundation was allegedly raped at knifepoint at her Banjara Hills penthouse in Hyderabad early this morning by a young man who also fled with Rs5 lakh.

This is just the latest in a series of shocking incidents involving foreigners that has brought India unwelcome attention from around the world.

In April 2006, a Japanese tourist alleged that she was drugged, raped, and robbed by a guesthouse manager in Pushkar, Rajasthan.

In February 2008, 15-year-old Briton Scarlett Keeling was raped and killed while holidaying in Goa.

In April last year, an Indian-American student at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was gang-raped by six acquaintances at a flat at Andheri in Mumbai.

In January this year, a nine-year-old Russian girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unidentified man at Arambol beach in North Goa. A month earlier, a Goan politician was named as a suspect in the rape of a 25-year-old Russian woman.

In April this year, a Japanese tourist alleged that she was gang-raped in Bodh Gaya, Bihar.

Given the growing prevalence of sexual predators, has India become a danger zone for foreign women? Should they think twice about visiting the country now? Do these incidents indicate a larger disturbing pattern that threatens the security of India's guests?
