Inhabitants feel the corporation must keep project’s cost under control.

The idea seems good, since many parts in the city are still not receiving proper water supply. But I doubt they will implement the scheme. I have read that sea water desalination plants are expensive. If it is so then a cost-benefit analysis must be undertaken, since public money must not be squandered for minor gains. The corporation should try to implement its plan of water harvesting.

The BMC projects a rosy picture, but it has hardly implemented any plan properly. I’m not sure of the quality of water from the desalination plants. Even the current supply is not potable for the consumers. The major problem is with the leakage of water. If BMC plugs leakages, there will be enough water for all localities. Moreover there is serious need to stop contamination of drinking water.

It is good that the corporation has planned to establish desalination plants to address the problem of water shortage in Mumbai. The water used must be disease free. If the water is meant for consumption, then it must not be diverted for washing or watering plants. They will have to make investments in constructing pipelines and other infrastructure.

I won’t blame the BMC for water problems in Mumbai since the population is huge and the resources are limited. The BMC should also conduct programmes to encourage people to save water. BMC officials must ensure the clean water supply to everyone. BMC should go ahead with the idea and swiftly install the system. The work should be given to private contractors as they work efficiently.

I have no faith in the BMC’s plan of desalination plants. Earlier they had come with the idea to make rainwater harvesting mandatory, but there was hardly any effort made to take the idea ahead. The project must be completed quickly, since it is an urgent need. If the cost involved in going ahead with the project is huge, it’s better if they concentrate on water harvesting and take care of water theft.
