Yahoo giving free smartphones to employees 'to ensure they work all the time'

US-based Internet giant Yahoo is giving smartphones to all of its employees, to make sure their staff are online, and able to work at all times.

The staff members are asked to pick up a phone of their choice as part of the 'Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!' programme.

The details of the plan were revealed in a leaked internal memo, seen by the Business Insider.

A source confirmed the report, adding 'people are happy', the Daily Mail reports.

According to the paper, Handsets up for grabs include the long awaited iPhone 5, its rival Samsung Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X, HTC EVO 4G LTE or Nokia Lumia 920.

The company will pay the cost of the phone, and the Internet data usage.

Yahoo insisted that the freebie is actually designed to be educational for its staff, as the phones will be similar to those owned by most Yahoo's consumers.

"We'd like our employees to have devices similar to our users, so we can think and work as the majority of our users do," the memo said.
