Two big urns containing bones and other articles belonging to Megalithic period (300 BC to 100 AD) were unearthed near Mayiladuthurai today.

The urns were noticed by construction workers who were digging the sand at Government Higher Secondary School campus at Thirumangalam village to lay foundation for a new building, official sources said in Nagapattinam.

The two urns were found at a depth of about 10 ft. One of it was found in broken form. The urns contained pieces of bones and a few other articles commonly used by the soldiers at that period, the sources said.

Mayiladuthurai Tahsildar Mala and archeological experts visited the spot and examined the urns. Considering the shape, colour and other aspects of the urns, it was believed that they belonged to Megalithic period, the sources said.

During Megalithic period soldiers were usually buried with their belongings in the urns, they said.
