A giant pumpkin in Britain, which is said to weigh more than a Fiat 500, has already smashed two records this weekend, and is making a bid for the world title.

The pumpkin, in Lymington, Hampshire, which weighs 1,652lb, has a 17ft waist, and for the last six weeks has been putting on a colossal two stone in weight each day.

It has already smashed the British and European records, and after an official weigh-off this month the Atlantic giant might become the heaviest pumpkin of all time.

Twin brothers Ian and Stuart Paton, 49, have been growing giant pumpkins at Pine Tops Nursery for 30 years.

"We want the world record and we are going to get it. This may be our lucky year as one of our six pumpkins is going to tip the scales at 1,652lb," The Daily Mail quoted Ian as saying.

"The current world record weight is 1,725lb, so if this difference falls in our favour we will have a new world record.

"We crossbreed the plants with the largest fruits to make the next generation of pumpkins even bigger," he said.

The current British record, also set by the brothers in 2008, stands at 1,457lb.

The new challenger will be star of the show when it is lifted by a forklift truck on to a pallet to compete head-to-head with other heavyweights at the Jubilee Sailing Trust Pumpkin Festival in Southampton.
