Xiaomi, at an event in Beijing today, took the wraps off the updated versions of their popular MiPad and the Note 2: incrementally called the MiPad 2 and the Redmi Note 3.

The Redmi Note 3 now gets a full metal body with a sandblasted finish to impart a more premium and solid demeanor. This phone also integrates a fingerprint sensor with which the company claims the device can be unlocked in one-third of a second.

On the photography front, there is a 13MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus for quicker shots, and a 5MP front camera that has 36 ‘smart beauty profiles’ for the all-out selfie enthusiast. Most importantly, the device packs a 4000mAH battery that is based on a slimmer profile resulting in the phone being just 8.65mm thin and weighing 164 gms--just 4 grams more than its predecessor. This dual SIM LTE phone also supports the newest 802.11ac WiFi standard, and is based on MIUI 7 running atop Android Lollipop. The phone will be available in three color variants: Silver, Dark grey and Gold.

Based on the MediaTek Helio X10 processor, the 2GB RAM/16GB internal storage version of the phone will be priced at 899 Chinese Yuan (an equivalent of Rs 9,340) while the 3GB RAM/32GB internal storage version will be priced at 1099 Yuan (equivalent of Rs 11,425.)

The company also outed their next tablet; the MiPad 2. Unlike the previous version based on Nvidia internals, this new one is now based on a 64-bit quad core 2.24GHz Intel Atom X5-Z8500 processor with an Intel HD Graphics GPU. Like its predecessor, this one is also based on a 7.9-inch display with a 2048x1536 (326ppi pixel density, virtually the same as the previous generation.)

It has 2GB of RAM, and on the camera front it integrates an 8MP rear and 5MP front shooter. To facilitate easier reading, the MiPad 2 sports a special mode that cuts down blue light emanating from the screen, which apparently eases eye strain during long-term viewing. Like the Redmi Note 3, this device is also based on the new, orientation-free USB Type-C plug. Physically, the MiPad 2 is both thinner and lighter than its previous generation; at 6.95mm it is 18 percent thinner and weighs in at 322gms (38g lighter than the first-gen Mi Pad.) It will be available in two color options: Dark grey and Champagne Gold.
