Club a group of your favourite professional wrestlers from the WWE universe, give them super powers that match a martial artist from the Mortal Kombat universe, and you get WWE Immortals. The game, which has been developed by NetherRealm Studios, the creators of the Mortal Kombat franchise and Injustice: Gods Among Us, is a free-to-play title that features superstars such as Triple H, Kane, The Big Show, Roman Reigns, John Cena and The Rock.

The game is over 1.3 GB and takes a while to download, but the effects, even on a 4.7” Moto X, look impressive. The setting is pretty eerie and could be mistaken for a fantasy hack-n-slash at first sight, and with good reason. Giant Big Show, Demon Kane, White Witch Trish Stratus and Celtic Warrior Sheamus are just some of the characters you you encounter.  However, the game will definitely look and feel better on a larger screen or on a phone with better specs. My personal experience while playing the game on the Moto X was that the phone heated up considerably. Another colleague, who played the game on the Xiaomi Mi4 (stay tuned for that review soon), faced a similar problem when it came to the phone heating up.

The gaming is simple. It involves a lot of tapping swiping the screen with two fingers. As you advance and understand the game better, you can try and attempt combination moves, like Demon Kane’s flaming powerbomb.Another thing – and this can be said about most heavy file games that you install on your phone– is that your phone battery drains very quickly. So if you do plan on playing the game, ensure that your battery is fully charged. However, remember to unplug it from the socket while playing, given the heating issue.

The overall experience was fun, but unidimensional. It's time for game developers to bring better story arcs to high-end games on mobile, instead of restricting the creativity to PC and consoles. A lot of gamers the world over would greatly appreciate the move, even if AAA smartphone games are battery hogs. WWE Immortals is available for download on iTunes and the Play Store.
