Woodland, a manufacturer of outdoor gear and outfit, is planning to launch trek-friendly mobile phone as a brand extension to its ruff and tough image and to cash in on growing adventure outings in the country.

Confirming to dna, Harkirat Singh, managing director, Woodland, said a smartphone foray is in the pipeline and that the product is in a very advanced stage of development. The company plans to launch the phone early next fiscal.

"The smartphone is being designed to deal with various unexpected situations/hardships that people face during their adventure activities. So it will be shockproof to the extent that one can bang it against the wall and it will not break. You can throw it in a pool of water and nothing will happen," said Singh. A specialist technology partner from Korea is developing the phone.

With more and more Indian youth taking to different kinds of adventurous activities and at frequent intervals, Woodland smartphone will be a handy tech gear that will also facilitate sharing experiences (still visuals, videos and live streaming) on the go.

According to Singh, the company has expanded its product portfolio over the years to give the a complete protective gear package including climbing shoes, special goose jackets, walking sticks, trekking umbrellas, special eyewear and other protective gear.

While not sharing precise specifications of the smartphone citing competitive reasons, Singh said sampling of the device is currently being done to ensure majority of the features (hardware and software) are adventure-compatible.

"It will be a state-of-the-art handset with all the applications. We can't have a flimsy handset under the Woodland banner; hence it's being designed to be a rugged device and slightly heavier in comparison with the delicate smartphones," he said.

Woodland will introduce two models of the smartphone that will be based on Google's Android platform. The company is looking to price the handsets at over Rs 12,000.
