The popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has reportedly abandoned all efforts to combat pornographic material appearing on the site, as its board members have not been able to reach a consensus on a technical solution to it.

Wikimedia Foundation co-founder Jimmy Wales deleted a thousand images deemed inappropriate for children in April 2010, but the 'wiki community' just restored 900 of them, Fox News reports.

FoxNews.com had published a series of articles about thousands of offensive pictures, videos and other material hidden on the site in May 2010.

Wales had earlier made a call for the foundation to implement a personal image filter in May 2011 and the Board of Trustees unanimously voted 10-0 in favor of the filter.

However, the board cancelled plans for the image filter following protests against the decision, leaving pornography freely available to all site visitors.

Walsh said board members felt the results of possible technological models are inconclusive.
