Whatsapp slowly rolls out free voice calling feature in India

WhatsApp is now offering free voice-calling feature to select users in India. As of now the feature is available on invite-only basis. At first glance, it looks like the access it restricted to Android only.

Reddit user pradnesh07 was able to get the feature activated. He says you need to get the Android Application Package from the website and not from the PlayStore. He explains the working of this feature in the video.

Looks like WhatsApp is going slow with the app roll out. For now, people can call only to those who have received the invite. It helps if you have the latest version of Android installed on your device.

The leaked images in December bear resemblance to that of showed in the video. The feature has a different UI than the usual WhatsApp. Call logs for incoming, outgoing and missed calls are also included. With the inclusion of this feature, WhatsApp, a $19 billion acquisition by Facebook, may be aiming to directly compete with apps like Viber, Line, and WeChat that already allow users to make calls.
