You'll soon be able to backup your WhatsApp data to your Google Drive, according to a blog post from Google yesterday. The feature will be added to Android users over the next few months.

Once you have it, the new feature lets you create a private backup of your chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos on WhatsApp, in Google Drive. And once you do, you can restore everything on a new device with a few taps. The addition backs up up your chats automatically, although you can turn it off as well. For that, you're going to have to open up your Google Drive in a desktop first, click the gear icon on the top right corner to open the drop down menu, and then click on "Settings". On the left is a tab called "Manage apps"; find WhatsApp in that list (it'll only appear once you have the new feature), and click on the "Options" menu to the right of it. Thenyou can select "Delete hidden app data" to delete your backup in Google Drive, and "Disconnect from Drive" to stop future backups.

If you need more help, here's a quick primer on how to configure WhatsApp backup for Google Drive, and how to restore WhatsApp chats to another device.

The new backup feature is rolling out over the next few months, so you'll have to keep an eye on your WhatsApp settings to see if it’s available.
