Arriving the week of October 10, "Skylanders: Imaginators" lets players build their own heroes, "100ft Robot Golf" offers a ridiculous, towering alternative to manicured greens, "Gears of War 4" sets out on another rough and tough adventure, "Dragon Quest Builders" clambers over "Minecraft," and "WWE 2K17" offers new features and old features -- and PlayStation launches its virtual reality headset.

100ft Robot Golf

Release Date: October 10
Platform: PlayStation 4

Take the chance to whack your way around cities, mountains, and the moon as a member of the towering Robot Golf Tour Association. Its developer made 2014's offbeat rotating taxi simulator "Roundabout," while commentators are the hosts of comedy podcasts "My Brother, My Brother and Me." Compatible with PlayStation VR, which launches October 13.

Gears of War 4

Release Date: October 11
Platform: Xbox One, Windows 10 PC

A new era for the action-heavy Gears of War franchise, passing the torch to a younger generation as Marcus Fenix battle-ready son, J.D., embarks with his companions on a mission to save the Earth-like planet Sera from a new breed of monstrous enemy. Multiplayer works across Xbox One and Win10 PC.

Dragon Quest Builders

Release Date: Week of October 11
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita

If Microsoft has the freeform "Minecraft," after buying up its studio in 2014, then Sony has the conceptually similar "Dragon Quest Builders," with its optional and charming storyline, as an exclusive from independent publisher Square Enix. Available in Japan since January, all indications are that it's a very, very good alternative -- some would even call it a well-deserved successor -- to that granddaddy of block-building video games.

WWE 2K17

Release Date: October 11
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One , Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

At its best, the "WWE 2K" series knows what it is: strength, athleticism, spectacle, and straight-faced pantomime rolled into one. The WWE shows' style is mimicked, wrestlers are invited to rampage all over the main stage and beyond, and a copious amount of extra content has been prepared for those that want to buy in more athletes, moves, and storylines.

PlayStation VR

Release Date: October 13

A virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4, PSVR is available for $399 (CDN$ 549, €399, £349, A$549, SGD$599, JPY¥44,980.) Its launch bundle includes headphones, a PS camera, and two PS Move controllers, and a launch line-up of games includes "Batman: Arkham VR," "Rez Infinite," "RIGS," and "Super Stardust Ultra." The third and least expensive of 2016's major consumer VR launches, after the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Skylanders: Imaginators

Release Date: October 13 (AUS, NZ), October 14 (UK), October 16 (NA)
Platform:  PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, WiiU

The sixth title in the Skylanders series lets players create their own heroes and heroines both within the game and as physical figurines (or t-shirts and trading cards) using the official Skylanders Creator app for iOS and Android devices.
