Western Digital (WD) has been making some great external hard drives for a while now, and their latest release is aimed squarely at the gaming market. The WD My Passport X is an HDD drive made for providing your Xbox with some much needed added storage.

We got to try out the 2TB model, packed in an only slightly larger than average casing. At 3.2x4.3-inches and 231g, it’s still very much portable. The My Passport X has a standard USB 3.0 cable, and it’s plug-and-play with absolutely no hassles.

Transfer times are fairly good, and we tried multiple variants just to be sure. Writing multiple files to the disk, amounting to approximately 1GB took an average of 20 seconds, while copying that same lot back took about 15, with a steady 50MBps. A monster 46GB folder took us about 9 minutes to copy to the drive and 12 minutes to send it back, average out at about 80MBps and 60MBps respectively.

But at Rs 8,845, why is a 2TB HDD so expensive you ask? That’s because the My Passport X has been optimised for console use, specifically the Xbox. The drive is compatible with both Xbox One and Xbox 360. For the Xbox One, just plug in the drive, follow the instructions on screen to format the disk and you’re done. You’re going to have to do it manually for an Xbox 360 however; just navigate to the “Storage Devices” section under “System Settings” and choose the format option. The coolest part though, is that you can take your drive with you and plug it into a friend’s console to play your games, without having to redownload.

According to WD, at an average of 36GB per Xbox One game and 7Gb per Xbox 360 title, you can store 50 added games on the Xbox One and 250 on the 360. That’s a pretty sweet deal, no matter which of the consoles you might own. Sadly, there’s no Playstation compatibility here.

As for durability…..you’re going to want to make sure you don’t drop it. The My Passport X is supposedly built for shock tolerance, but it has WD’s standard plastic casing that most of it’s hard drives are housed in. If you’ve owned one of their drives in the past, you know you definitely don’t want that jostling around too much.

You can buy the WD My Passport X directly from their US store here, or from Amazon India here.

What we liked:
Good transfer rates, Xbox compatibility.

What we didn’t like:
Average casing makes you want to cloak it in bubble wrap to avoid damage.

Price: Rs 8,845
