Everyone knows the heartache of buying a swanky new smartphone, with a sleek look, only to end up dropping it and cracking the display. That’s why most smartphone users buy screen protectors and cases to protect against their carelessness. But what if there was a way to protect against clumsiness without ruining your phone’s look?

Enter the ProtectPax, a commercially available liquid that seems to be able to make your smartphone display nigh unbreakable.  The invisible “liquid glass” screen protector claims to make your smartphone display “hard as sapphire.”

Currently crowdfunding through the website Indiegogo, ProtectPax has already raised $50,942 over and above its $20,000 goal, with another 25 days to go. It’s composed largely of ‘titanium dioxide nanoparticles which close the microscopic wells on the glass.” The company, which bears the same name as the product, says the nanotechnology involved was originally developed for use in the aerospace and aviation industries, and is now being repurposed for commercial use.

All it takes to protect your phone is to evenly slather the display with the ProtectPax, and wait 10 minutes for it to dry. It supposedly ranks 9H on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which means it should even be resistant to scratches from a knife or steel file, and even protects against electromagnetic radiation. The team insists the product can even be used for other devices with LCD displays like smartwatches, televisions, and digital cameras.

The drawback is that the coating will last for only about a year before it needs to be reapplied, though it does claim to be ultra-tough. In addition, there’s no guarantee the product doesn’t have other side effects, like possibly damaging your phone if it enters the earpiece of a phone that isn’t water-resistant.

And since the liquid itself is clear, how users are supposed to gauge the uniformity when applying the solution, or even know when the durability is wearing off, isn’t stated. But, at the very least, it’s an additional form of protection for your smartphone from your butterfingers, and costs only $39 for adventurous buyers willing to test it out.
