Viagra, also known as ‘Sildenafil’, is a drug used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Before Viagra, there was no oral solution to treat impotence—the only option was an injection or a rather gruesome prosthetic implant.

Two researchers, Simon Campbell and David Roberts, were working at the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to study a new drug called ‘Sildenafil’ that was being researched in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and to lower blood pressure.

After multiple trials, it couldn’t prevent angina (chest pain) but lead to an astonishing side effect—reports of erections in the subjects. Thereafter, it was decided to use the drug on patients who had erectile dysfunction disorder. The tests proved successful, and it was given the name that it has become famous with today.

When Viagra is consumed, it relaxes muscles and increases blood flow, while also restraining the enzyme PDE5 (Phosphodiesterase Type 5,) which is known for causing dilation in blood vessels, resulting in more blood flow.

This drug was approved by US Food and Drug Administration in 1998 to be sold in pharmacies, and is one of fastest-selling prescribed drugs in the world. It is also recognised as being one of the top 10 health advancements.
