The online travel reviews giant is rolling out a platform for airline passengers to review flight experiences and share feedback on airlines and the quality of their various services.

TripAdvisor is launching a new platform where air passengers can review airlines. Users can access airline reviews in two ways, either via the site's flight search tool on via a specially dedicated airlines page. A score of one to 10 is given to each air travel itinerary based on information from passenger reviews, such as the quality of inflight services, the flight duration, cleanliness, comfort etc.

"The new enhancements to the site bring transparency to a marketplace that has become increasingly difficult for consumers to make direct comparisons between flight options," said TripAdvisor in a news release outlining the site's latest plans to expand its base of 350 million traveler reviews.

This development responds to a growing need for clarity from air passengers. A recent TripAdvisor poll found that 42% of US travelers believe airlines are making it harder to find the total cost of a flight. The same survey found that 39% of consumers believe that airlines' inflight amenities information is not very accessible.

TripAdvisor airline reviews will be available in 48 markets and 29 languages. The site has had the airline industry in its sight for some time. In 2007, TripAdvisor bought SeatGuru.com, a website where passengers share tips on aircraft seating and amenities. Travelers publish reviews based on their specific seat numbers, and can see the most highly rated seats for each type of aircraft and route.

Airlines have long been reviewed and rated online. Flight-report.com, for example, has a community of passengers who publish reports on each flight they take. They describe their route, onboard services and overall experience, with photos and videos to illustrate their experience. Similarly,Whattheflight.com users read and write reviews about flights and have access to a flight search and booking tool that integrates customer ratings.
