The developer for Torment: Tides of Numenera, inXile, has issued an apology after it was discovered that some of the stretch goals promised in the game's crowdfunding campaign have not been met.

After the Achievements for the final game, due to release February 28, were leaked, it came to light that certain extended goals detailed in the then record-breaking crowdfunding campaign in 2013 were missing. Particularly, some missing companions, as well as Italian language support, both of which were promised. Backers who find the missing content a deal-breaker, considering they were already funded, can still claim a refund, however.

Most important though, isn’t just the fact that some promised content was never developed; these sort of things happen in the gaming industry all the time. What’s more upsetting is that backers who helped pay for the game’s development are just finding out, less than a month before official release, and that too because it was spotted by some clever detective work, and not announced by the company.

There’s really no justification for inXile to have behaved in such a manner, but the creative lead for the game, Colin McComb, tried to explain it anyway. “We did have to cut some content, and had to make some difficult decisions based on lengthy internal prototyping, budgeting, and scheduling considerations,” he said in a statement to Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese. “Some of our initial ideas didn't pan out as we had hoped, and some of them would have cost us content that we felt was more important for the overall experience of the game. Game development is never a straight line, and it's extraordinarily rare for a project to go unchanged from vision to completion.

“We should have communicated the cuts earlier,” he added, “when they happened. Unfortunately, because we were busy finishing and polishing the game, we neglected to reach out to our community and explain the changes that were necessary. Please know that we absolutely and sincerely apologise to our backers for that lack of communication. We're extraordinarily grateful to all our backers who made it possible for us to get this far. We are currently considering ways to integrate ideas that didn't make it into the initial launch, and we promise that any potential future expansions or content will be made available for free to all backers.”

To go into more detail, the leaked achievements for PC, PS$, and Xbox One make note of six companions, yet the Kickstarter stretch goals detailed eight, possibly nine. New companions were promised every half million starting at a total of US $2 million in donations, up to $3.5 million. When the US $3 million mark was reached, seven companions were supposed to be in the game, yet the final version only contains six.

Torment: Tides of Numenera, the spiritual successor to revered RPG classic Planescape: Torment, will launch February 28 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
